How come they don’t make a vaccine for the global epidemic of materialism? I can only imagine that the complications of this disease lead to other life altering and potentially life threatening illnesses such as depression, suicide, hypertension, heart disease and stroke.

From earliest childhood we’re taught to set goals. The objective of this training is to instil a fear-driven purpose in young people to work hard in situations they don’t love so that they can obtain lots of stuff like houses, cars and expensive vacations. After all, people who work so hard at jobs they hate deserve some sort of an award for their unhappiness, right?

As the sole-support of a large family I find myself falling into this trap of setting goals for ‘stuff’ more frequently than I care to admit. I can easily fill up my days working and caregiving, leaving very little time to care for myself, all in the hopes of setting up a vehicle replacement fund, saving a down payment for a home and being able to buy the things my kids want. And I become unhappy.

I don’t want to be happy someday…I want it now! Happiness in the Present requires setting my goals on things unseen. It means striving to live out of principles and concepts rather than working for stuff I may never be able to own.  “We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

What’s unseen in this life? Love. Joy. Peace. Patience. Kindness. Goodness. Gentleness. Self Control. The Divine. Integrity. Oh – I get it! The vaccine for materialism is derived from fruit. The Fruit of the Spirit.

Hmmmm…so how do I obtain the correct antibodies to create this vaccine? Quite simply. Walk moment by moment in connection with the Holy Spirit. Start every day off in communion with the Divine, asking for its guidance and direction as you set your intentions. Do this and you will naturally produce the Fruit required to create the Sacred Vaccine for materialism.

Seek first your connection with God and all other things will fall into place as they should.
